Prepare your history for the GP

If attention or impulsivity difficulties affect work, education and relationships, book a GP appointment. Give examples across different areas and childhood information where possible. An online screening tool can help frame questions but cannot diagnose ADHD.

The NHS ↗ describes specialist referral and consideration of alternative causes. To continue overseas treatment, bring the full report, medicine names, doses, titration and monitoring history. Explain immediately how much medicine remains.

NHS, private assessment and Right to Choose

In England, ask about an appropriate NHS provider and whether Right to Choose applies. This requires an eligible NHS pathway; choosing any private clinic does not make subsequent care NHS-funded.

Check the NHS Choice Framework ↗. Establish whether the selected service offers diagnosis only or also titration and monitoring. Waiting lists and arrangements differ.

Starting and continuing medication

ADHD medicines are started and monitored by specialists. A GP may take over prescribing only through agreed shared care; a report alone does not create this arrangement. Before paying privately, ask the GP and clinic who remains responsible if transfer is declined.

Clarify blood pressure, pulse and other monitoring, review intervals, repeat prescriptions and shortage plans. Do not independently change formulations or alter doses to stretch supplies.

Costs and moving-country transitions

Private costs include assessment, titration, follow-ups, prescriptions and medicine. Insurance may have specific exclusions; obtain written coverage confirmation.

An overseas prescription, particularly for a controlled drug, may be unsuitable for UK dispensing. EEA and Swiss prescription guidance ↗ excludes certain controlled medicines. Arrange the clinical transition early. Seek care for substantial deterioration; a diagnostic waiting list should not be your only contact.
