Establish the purpose and family circumstances

A short visit to an adult child normally falls under the visitor route. Permanent relocation requires an independent immigration basis. An adult child's British citizenship or ILR, spare room and willingness to pay expenses do not create a general parent visa.

Record the parent's nationality, residence, health, care needs and your own UK status. If the EU Settlement Scheme might apply, separately check the residence history and family conditions: that route's rules cannot be extended to every family.

When Adult Dependent Relative may apply

ADR ↗ is for an adult who needs long-term personal care for everyday tasks because of age, illness or disability. The applicant must also show that the necessary care cannot be obtained in their country of residence because it is unavailable or unaffordable.

ADR 5.2 ↗ assesses that position even with financial help from the UK sponsor. Wanting to live nearby, loneliness or advanced age without the relevant care needs does not replace the requirement. The sponsor must hold an eligible status and provide maintenance, accommodation and care without public funds. An initial application is normally made outside the UK.

Build the evidence

Obtain an independent medical account explaining which tasks the parent cannot perform and the help required. Gather information about care actually available where they live, its cost, suitable providers and why relatives or other people cannot reasonably supply it.

On the UK side, prepare evidence of the relationship, status, income or qualifying savings, accommodation and a concrete care plan with a budget. For settlement, the sponsor normally gives a five-year maintenance undertaking, rather than a promise covering the first few months. Check the required financial documents and evidence periods against the rules, and translate foreign-language records.

Compare alternatives before applying

An eligible dependent parent may qualify under the EU Settlement Scheme ↗, but the qualifying relative's circumstances, dates and dependency must be checked. A parent may sometimes have their own basis, such as eligible employment; the family relationship does not replace that route's requirements.

A long-term visitor visa allows repeated visits subject to its conditions, rather than residence through successive trips. The Visitor Rules ↗ expressly restrict that practice. Do not plan relocation around spending six months in the UK, briefly leaving and returning.

Before paying for ADR, obtain an individual assessment from a regulated professional: the fee and evidence preparation are substantial, and refusal may affect later plans. Check the current fee for the sponsor's status, translations, medical evidence and ongoing care costs. Do not buy tickets for permanent relocation before the required decision.
