Decide what you will teach

Yoga teacher, gym instructor and personal trainer are different roles. Choose between group classes, individual programmes, employment in a club and independent practice. Training and responsibilities depend on the service and audience.

The official yoga-teacher profile ↗ describes college and professional training, while the personal-trainer profile ↗ covers other routes, including apprenticeships. Personal exercise experience helps but does not replace the ability to teach safely and adapt activity for others.

Check training before paying

Ask for the exact qualification, awarding organisation, practical assessment, supervised teaching and prerequisites. Establish whether prospective employers and insurers accept the course. “International certificate” is not enough information by itself.

For fitness, explore industry routes through CIMSPA careers ↗. For yoga, compare the relevant professional body's programme and teachers' experience. Calculate all costs: tuition, assessment, additional modules, travel and possible resits. Do not assume a short online module qualifies you to work with every client group.

Prepare for practice

Check professional insurance and public liability, first aid/CPR, venue requirements and the limits of your competence. For children or vulnerable adults, establish the checks and safeguarding requirements appropriate to the role. Do not claim that one certificate covers every medical condition, pregnancy or rehabilitation need.

Agree responsibility for premises, equipment, registration questionnaires and emergencies. Prepare clear booking, cancellation and payment terms. If collecting clients' health information, keep only what is necessary and protect confidentiality.

Find initial work

Explore club and studio vacancies, cover classes, mentoring and observing experienced instructors. For your own group, begin with a realistic size and an audience suited to your training. Seek feedback and continue supervised practice where needed.

Calculate income after venue hire, insurance, travel, marketing and preparation time. Payment for one class is not net hourly profit. For independent work, use HMRC's guidance ↗ and check permission for self-employment. Do not leave your main job solely on the assumption of fully booked classes without tested demand.
