How to access cervical screening when your GP keeps postponing it

If screening is due and your practice postpones appointments, ask for a definite replacement date, cancellation list and alternative local services. Missing an invitation does not mean waiting for the next invitation cycle.

Establish when you are due

In England, routine invitations for people with a cervix aged 25–64 now use a five-year interval after a relevant negative HPV result. Abnormal results or previous treatment may require different follow-up. Supply overseas results and confirm your recall date. NHS: invitations ↗.

Contact the practice if an invitation is missing or lost. Check your address and NHS App details. Trans men and non-binary people may need to arrange invitations with their GP separately.

Find an available appointment

A nurse or doctor usually takes the sample at a GP practice. Some areas offer screening at sexual health clinics or walk-in centres. Not every sexual health clinic does it: confirm eligibility, booking and results transfer before travelling. NHS: how to book ↗.

Without a GP, register or contact a service offering screening. For repeated postponements, ask the practice manager to help organise access, especially for a clinically important repeat test.

Prepare for a comfortable examination

Mention anxiety, previous pain, pregnancy and interpretation needs when booking. You can request a female professional, chaperone, longer appointment or smaller speculum. The clinician explains options, and examination requires consent.

Appointments are usually best outside menstruation. During infection treatment or use of vaginal medicines, ask the service about preparation. Do not stop prescribed treatment yourself for screening.

Confirm receipt of results

Ask when and how results arrive, then check them. Establish the next recall or need for repeat testing or colposcopy. For a private test, agree follow-up and NHS record transfer: commercial results do not necessarily change invitations automatically.

Unusual bleeding, pain or discharge changes require symptom assessment regardless of screening schedules and previous normal results. NHS home HPV self-testing follows a separate invitation process rather than replacing any appointment on request. Check local programmes in other UK nations.
