Identify the application being considered

Registering a child as British and obtaining a first passport are separate processes. Locate the submission confirmation, UAN or other reference, payment receipt and biometrics date. Establish that the citizenship application was actually submitted, rather than only saved as a draft or linked to an appointment.

For registration of an eligible UK-born child under 18 ↗, GOV.UK normally indicates a decision within six months, although some cases take longer. This is a service expectation, not a guaranteed decision on a particular day. For another registration basis, check the guidance for that category.

Check requests and correspondence access

Review the email address used in the form, including spam, and communications received by an authorised representative. Confirm that biometrics and requested evidence were completed. Avoid resubmitting a large document archive without a specific request; first identify what is missing.

If your address or other material circumstances change, follow the post-application instructions ↗. Keep confirmation of the update. Changing an address with a bank or school does not automatically update Home Office records.

Prepare a precise UKVI enquiry

Use the official UKVI contact tool ↗ to identify the appropriate channel. Prepare the child's name and date of birth, application reference, submission and biometrics dates, details of the applicant with parental responsibility and a short history of communications already received.

State the actual problem: the service timeframe has passed, an expected request did not arrive, receipt of a response is unclear, or circumstances need updating. Provide only necessary supporting material through the specified secure channel. Contact-centre staff cannot promise a decision date or predict the outcome. Do not share passport numbers or application references in public groups to find comparable cases.

Complaints and passports are separate steps

The UKVI complaints procedure ↗ says its online complaint form is not for ordinary application-progress enquiries. A service complaint and a progress request have different purposes; complaining does not itself speed up a decision.

After approval, check the certificate's personal details. A British passport requires a separate application: a child passport below age 16, or an adult passport from 16. A citizenship certificate is not a document for entering the UK. Before registration is completed, separately maintain the child's appropriate immigration permission and travel documents. A pending citizenship application should not be treated as an automatic visa extension. Obtain professional advice on the documents and deadlines where a prolonged unexplained delay or expiring permission creates a practical problem.
