For regular friendships, a practical local group is often more useful than a long list of events across London. Start with age, interests, preferred language and available days. Involve teenagers in choosing: a parents' meetup and a youth club serve different purposes.

Find local options

Identify your borough through the GOV.UK council finder ↗. Search its website for the Family Information Service, youth activities, the local offer where SEND is relevant and leisure listings. Ask the school about after-school clubs and local partners.

Check the nearest library through the official library-services finder ↗. Libraries provide community activities and learning materials; confirm ages, booking and timetables with your own branch. Do not assume every listed event runs weekly.

Verify the organiser of a Russian-speaking group

Treat parental recommendations as starting points. Find the club's or supplementary school's official description: organiser, venue, ages and language. Ask whether different levels of Russian are welcome and whether a parent remains during the session.

For teenagers, check the age mix, format and whether independent arrival is allowed. Do not publish a child's school, address and regular schedule in an open search message.

Check arrangements before attending

If the child stays without a parent, ask about safeguarding, staff checks, first aid, authorised collection and complaints. DfE provides parents with guidance on expectations of clubs, tutors and coaches, including supplementary schools. DfE: choosing activities ↗.

Request prices for trials, subscriptions, missed sessions, trips and materials. Clarify what free means for the particular activity: registration, limited places or extra costs may apply.

Start with one manageable routine

Attend a trial or open session where offered. Check the journey at the relevant time, accessibility and your child's response to the group. Agree a short trial period, then consider whether they want to return, are making connections and can manage the workload.

If it is unsuitable, change one factor: age range, size, language or activity. Avoid booking five paid courses immediately in an attempt to accelerate settling in. Raise concerns about organisation with the responsible person before the next visit.
