Everyday nail and cuticle care at home

Home nail care does not require a professional electric file. Suitable personal scissors or clippers, a file and a familiar moisturiser are often easier than an elaborate set. Choose tools you can control without excessive pressure.
AAD recommends gentle care and protecting cuticles ↗. Avoid cutting protective skin for an exceptionally “clean” outline or tearing hangnails. Address snagging edges carefully with an appropriate tool without injuring nearby skin.
Everyday habits
Use comfortable moisturising after handwashing and protect hands during cleaning or prolonged water exposure. Cuticle oil can be a pleasant format, but expensive products are not essential for basic care. Check fragrance and tolerability.
Avoid using nails to open packaging. File snagging edges and choose a length compatible with work and household tasks. A photographed long shape may be impractical for musical instruments, childcare or manual work.
With polish or extensions
Do not peel off polish or artificial material. Follow the particular system's removal instructions or ask a technician. Applying care products over a coating cannot repair underlying trauma or assess pain and colour changes.
AAD's manicure safety guidance ↗ also helps when choosing a salon. Ask how tools are processed and say if you do not want cuticle removal. Someone else's personal set is not automatically safe after a quick wipe.
When another route is needed
Persistent pain, swelling, discharge or noticeable nail changes need appropriate medical assessment. Avoid digging out a painful ingrown nail yourself. People with diabetes or circulation problems should discuss safe care with their clinician.
Photograph changes in ordinary light and record onset and products used. This is more useful than randomly buying a “strengthening” treatment. Cosmetic salons and healthcare professionals address different needs; choose according to the problem.
