How to choose a doula in London and agree birth support

Establish the role and expectations
Discuss what you want: preparing questions for the maternity team, labour support, helping your partner or practical postnatal support. A doula should not replace clinical assessment by a midwife or doctor. Make treatment decisions with the maternity team after a clear explanation of options.
Doula UK describes family support and helping parents express their own wishes. What is a doula? ↗. Check membership separately from any claimed medical qualification.
Meet and check experience
Ask about training, relevant birth experience, mentoring, languages, references and insurance. Discuss how the person responds to a changed plan, caesarean birth or transfer between settings.
Consider whether you feel comfortable discussing personal boundaries. Avoid promises of a particular birth outcome and pressure to reject recommended clinical care.
Agree availability and backup
Record on-call dates, contact arrangements, arrival expectations and what happens during overlapping births or illness. Meet the backup beforehand where possible. For prolonged labour, discuss relief cover and rest.
Check the maternity unit's current birth-partner, visiting and theatre rules. A doula contract does not establish access to every room. Include necessary organisational questions in your birth preferences.
Obtain complete terms and pricing
Specify antenatal meetings, attendance, postnatal visits, travel, extra hours and cancellation. Ask about premature birth, induction before the on-call period or changed family plans. London has no uniform price; compare the same package of support.
Check consumer terms and keep the written offer. GOV.UK: consumer rights ↗. If finances are limited, ask Doula UK about current Access Fund options. Support depends on assessment and resources and should not be treated as guaranteed before confirmation.
