How egg freezing works in the UK and what to check before choosing a clinic

Start with a licensed clinic
Check fertility preservation and the exact site through the HFEA clinic search ↗. Bring medicines, results and reproductive history. Ask which checks are needed and how findings affect the decision.
Ovarian-reserve assessment aids planning but cannot guarantee a number of future children. Request a realistic range, possible need for further cycles and limitations of the data.
Discuss stages and risks
Plans usually involve stimulation, monitoring, egg collection and freezing suitable eggs. Obtain the visit schedule, arrangements for getting home and complication instructions. The clinic determines treatment; do not copy someone else's protocol.
Age when eggs are collected matters. Frozen-egg outcome statistics often involve small numbers, so ask how applicable they are to you. HFEA: egg freezing ↗.
Budget for the whole pathway
Request separate costs for consultation, tests, medicines, collection, freezing and annual storage. Check cancellation and low-yield arrangements. Later thawing, fertilisation/ICSI and transfer usually cost separately; storage does not itself pay for future treatment.
For medical indications, establish NHS funding and its limits. Elective freezing for personal reasons is not automatically free. If moving, ask about transfer to another licensed clinic and transport charges.
Maintain consent and contact
The law permits storage for treatment for up to 55 years from initial storage, but consent must be renewed every ten years. Payment periods and lawful consent periods are separate. HFEA: storage and consent ↗.
Update contact details and retain contracts and deadlines. Discuss decisions after death, loss of capacity or choosing not to use the eggs. Request counselling and time before signing. Stored eggs do not remove age-related risks of a future pregnancy.
