A business dinner, formal reception and ordinary restaurant meeting need different details. Identify your uncertainty: cutlery, introductions, service, conversation or dress code. This makes it easier to choose targeted teaching instead of a broad expensive manners course.
Etiquette helps participants feel comfortable, and many questions can be clarified with the event organiser. If you have an invitation, give the teacher an anonymised description rather than other people’s personal information.
Find provision
Debrett’s coaching ↗ includes social and dining etiquette and provides a practical starting point for asking about programmes and terms. Its etiquette guidance ↗ also offers material for independent preparation.
Compare teaching experience and content rather than promises of behaving like an aristocrat. Ask which practices apply to a modern British event and which belong to specialist protocol. Historical conventions do not all apply to an ordinary work meal.
Check the practical content
Useful teaching can include place settings, different dishes, host and guest roles, communication with staff and handling uncertainty. Ask whether you can practise and ask questions or whether the format is a lecture.
For a dining experience, establish whether an actual meal is included, the course count, venue, alcohol and dietary arrangements. A restaurant photograph does not prove that food is part of the fee.
Costs and practical use
Request the complete fee, duration, group size, additional restaurant costs and rescheduling rules. For individual online teaching, check what you need at home. Gift bookings need workable dates and a suitable instructional language.
Before the real event, reread the invitation, confirm dietary needs and clarify dress code with the host. If unsure about an utensil, follow the service and ask calmly. A useful course provides understandable practice and confidence rather than suggesting a small mistake must ruin the evening.
