Completing a bank tax-residence self-certification

Establish what the bank has requested

A CRS self-certification, address update, source-of-funds check and HMRC residence certificate are different documents. Read the form title, relevant period, response deadline and the bank's instructions. If a request arrives through a message link, verify it in the bank's app or through its official contact details.

Tax residence is not the same as nationality, immigration permission or a registered address. Moving to the UK does not automatically end residence elsewhere. Separate foreign obligations to report accounts are not fulfilled simply by completing a bank form.

Identify the relevant countries

Determine British status using the UK residence rules ↗, considering the tax year, days and connections. Another country's status requires its own test. If dual residence is possible, obtain advice rather than selecting whichever country has lower tax.

HMRC's financial-reporting manual ↗ states that, from 1 January 2026, self-certification should disclose all relevant jurisdictions without excluding one solely through a treaty tie-breaker. For a foreign bank, also check local CRS implementation and its instructions. Bank reporting and the final allocation of taxing rights under a treaty are separate issues.

Provide the correct tax identifier

Prepare your full name, date of birth, current address, residence jurisdictions and the TIN for each. The OECD describes UK identifiers ↗: UTR and National Insurance numbers are used in the relevant circumstances. A passport number or Companies House registration is not automatically a substitute for a personal tax identifier.

Check which identifier the form accepts. If you do not have one, use the permitted explanation rather than inventing a number or using someone else's NI number. Do not register for Self Assessment solely to fill a UTR field without checking whether registration is actually required. Report changes in circumstances through the bank's procedure.

Keep the response separate from tax filing

Retain the completed form, explanations and submission acknowledgement. If the bank requires an official document, check how to obtain a certificate of residence or letter of confirmation ↗: a signed self-certification and an HMRC document are not interchangeable in every situation.

CRS involves exchange of account information; a bank's request is not itself a demand to pay tax. However, it does not replace your own return or assessment of foreign income. If you discover an earlier mistake, correct the bank's records and review tax reporting separately. Ignoring the form because the account produces no income does not establish residence and may complicate account servicing.
