Booking a hotel for an overnight or early-morning arrival

Arrival date does not determine room access

An early-morning flight arrival does not normally mean a hotel room booked from that date is immediately available. Every property has its own check-in time. For example, Premier Inn lists standard check-in from 15:00 ↗, with paid early check-in from 11:00 subject to availability and not offered everywhere. These are one chain's terms, not a universal hotel rule.

Estimate when you will reach the property after immigration, baggage reclaim and the transfer. Give the hotel that time rather than only your aircraft's landing time.

When to book the preceding night

If you definitely need a room at 06:00 or 09:00, ask whether early access can be guaranteed separately. If not, discuss paying for the previous night. An arrival on the morning of 21 November may require booking the night of 20–21 November.

Notify the hotel in writing of your actual late arrival and obtain confirmation that it will hold the room until morning. Otherwise, absence during the evening may fall under its no-show rules. Also confirm checkout time: paying for the preceding night does not automatically let you keep the room throughout the following day.

Questions before paying

Request the guaranteed room-access time, total supplement, cancellation terms and overnight key-collection process. A small hotel or apartment may have limited reception hours. Obtain access codes, instructions and document-check requirements beforehand.

Distinguish guaranteed early check-in from an availability request. The latter depends on a suitable room being vacated and cleaned. Another guest's successful early arrival does not bind a different property or date. Save the confirmation with the reservation, particularly when booking through an intermediary.

Alternatives to an extra night

If immediate sleep is unnecessary, ask about luggage storage, breakfast, showers or use of communal areas before check-in. These may cost extra. Compare day-use rooms and normal bookings by their actual access hours and total cost.

For a long flight connection, ensure that the hotel is in an airport area you can access: landside accommodation may require entry permission. Reconfirm the plan before flying. If the flight is delayed, tell the hotel your new arrival time and check that the room remains reserved. An airline notification does not substitute for contacting the property.
