How to apply for an Italian Schengen visa from the UK

An Italian Schengen application is appropriate when Italy is your sole or main destination. UK residence and nationality are different matters: check visa requirements for your passport. The Italian consulate in London ↗ deals with its own district; if you live elsewhere, identify the competent mission first.

Its guidance specifically excludes ordinary applications from people visiting the UK on a short-stay category C visa. Your evidence of UK immigration permission must meet the published requirements, including the necessary validity beyond the trip.

Book through the official VFS route

Follow the consulate's link to VFS Italy in the UK ↗. Choose your travel purpose and download the relevant checklist. The consulate requires personal attendance even if you have previously provided Schengen fingerprints; do not arrange for a friend to submit the application instead.

Make sure the appointment category matches the application. Keep the confirmation and a record of the services you have paid for.

Prepare the documents and employment letter

Use the current checklist for your category, rather than another country's requirements. Align the dates on the application, reservations, insurance and leave. Ask your employer for a letter in the required format; give HR the relevant dates and content requirements in advance. Self-employment, study or support from a spouse require appropriate evidence instead of an invented employment history.

Check the instructions for originals, copies, statements and translations. An incomplete file may require another appointment. Keep copies of everything you submit.

Plan around your passport and budget

Processing does not automatically include waiting for an appointment or return delivery. The European Commission ↗ gives a normal processing period of 15 days, extendable to 45; particular cases require additional planning.

Add the applicable consular fee, VFS charge and any optional services. Paying for a service does not guarantee approval or a multiple-entry visa. Before arranging another international journey, establish when your passport will be available. On return, check the sticker and the actual conditions of admission.
