Choosing a makeup lesson for yourself in London

If you want to do your own makeup, request a lesson involving practice rather than only an application before an event. You need to repeat techniques and receive corrections. An artist doing everything can produce a lovely result while leaving you unsure what to do the following morning.
Choose one main goal: a quick everyday routine, lighter-looking coverage, eyeliner or updating a familiar look. Mention glasses, contact lenses, sensitivity and difficulty with fine movements. You do not need to learn an entire professional kit in one visit.
Compare the formats
MAC's personal service menu ↗, checked on 7 October 2026, lists Master Everyday Makeup appointments of 30, 60 and 90 minutes at £30, £60 and £90. The fee is redeemable against purchases at the time of the service under the brand's terms; this is not an unconditionally free lesson.
Bobbi Brown offers personal appointments ↗. Confirm the lesson format, price and availability at the selected counter. Compare independent tutors too: brand-counter teaching generally uses that brand's range, while a private artist's approach needs separate agreement.
Questions before paying
Ask whether you can bring your own makeup and brushes, how much time you will practise and whether shade names and written steps are supplied. Confirm language, lighting, location and cancellation conditions. Agree on photographs or recording a demonstration.
For a redeemable fee, establish minimum purchase requirements, eligible products and whether redemption is possible later. Do not treat the lesson price as your total budget if you intend to buy products beyond the redeemable amount.
Make the skill repeatable
If the format allows, ask the artist to demonstrate on one half of your face while you complete the other. Note the sequence, product quantities and the technique you found difficult. Check shades in natural light as well as counter lighting.
Separate products already at home from genuinely missing items and request a minimal workable routine. Repeat it at home while the explanation is fresh and ask whether brief follow-up feedback is available. A shopping bag does not replace a technique you can perform.
