Understand the invitation first

Black tie, cocktail and wedding-guest wording may call for different lengths and formality. Confirm the setting, timing, weather and organiser's preferences. At weddings, consider cultural expectations and colour restrictions rather than relying on one social-media rule.

Budget for the full outfit: dress, underwear, shoes, alterations and accessories. An expensive garment may be poor value if it needs extensive reconstruction or uncomfortable footwear.

Starting points

Phase Eight's finder lists shops, ranges and services ↗, while John Lewis Oxford Street ↗ offers a department-store starting point. Do not assume online stock is displayed locally; confirm the product code and size before travelling.

For a difficult brief, ask about personal styling and appointments. Give your height, size, budget and event date. Two or three silhouette examples and a clear explanation of fit problems will make the consultation more useful.

Test the outfit properly

Bring the intended underwear and shoes. Sit, lift your arms, walk and operate the fastening. A dress for a photograph and one for dinner and dancing face different demands. Assess transparency under ordinary light and whether another layer is required.

Check fabric and care instructions because specialist cleaning adds ongoing costs. Before hemming, ask how embroidery, pleats and proportions will be retained. Avoid buying a substantially wrong size based on a vague promise that everything can be altered.

Payment and timing

Clarify returns, exchanges, sale terms and alteration fees before paying. Keep labels until you decide to retain the dress; alterations may affect voluntary change-of-mind returns.

Allow time for another fitting after the work. For an imminent event, prioritise an available size needing minimal changes. Compare renting with purchasing, including delivery, damage responsibility and the practical task of returning the item afterwards.
