Which painkillers can you buy without a prescription in England?

Many forms of paracetamol and ibuprofen are available without a prescription in England. Tell the pharmacist where the pain is, when it began, your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions and everything you take. Bring the packaging of your usual medicine: an overseas brand name may not identify an equivalent UK product.
Compare the active ingredient, strength and formulation. A more expensive brand is not necessarily more suitable. Adult tablets and children's liquids have different instructions.
Check before buying
Paracetamol ↗ may already be included in cold and flu products. Combining several products can accidentally cause an overdose. Contact 111 if you exceed the instructions, even if you currently feel well.
Ibuprofen ↗ needs particular checking with a history of ulcers, kidney disease, some forms of asthma, anticoagulant treatment or pregnancy. Do not independently combine it with another anti-inflammatory painkiller such as naproxen.
Use the actual product instructions
Read the leaflet for the formulation you have bought. Do not copy a dose from a similar box or increase it because the pain continues. Ask the pharmacist to write down an appropriate schedule and duration after reviewing your circumstances.
An over-the-counter purchase is normally paid for in full. Having an NHS prescription exemption does not automatically make every pharmacy purchase free. Ask whether a simple product without extra ingredients is suitable and what pack size is appropriate for brief use.
When pain needs assessment
Recurring pain needs its cause assessed, especially if you regularly buy painkillers. Arrange a review with your GP and explain what you have already tried and whether it helped.
Sudden severe pain, chest pain, speech problems or a severe allergic reaction require urgent medical attention. If the situation is not immediately life-threatening but you need help choosing a service today, use NHS 111 ↗. Pain relief should not postpone an examination you need.
