Choosing a vacuum or robot for a UK home with fitted carpet

For a home with fitted carpet, first decide which cleaning jobs you want a device to handle. Daily crumbs, stairs, upholstery and occasional thorough cleaning are different tasks. A robot may be a useful assistant, but being able to travel over carpet does not mean it replaces every attachment of a conventional vacuum.

Map the restrictions

Record the floor covering, pile, thresholds, narrow passages, low furniture and stairs. Measure the space for the charging station and the clearance in front. Ask about the actual model's behaviour around fringed rugs, cables and items commonly left on the floor.

Check the flooring manufacturer's recommendations. The iRobot comparison information ↗ also explains that suction figures alone do not describe cleaning performance. Compare the brush, practical limitations and maintenance rather than one prominent number.

Robot or conventional vacuum

A robot can be convenient for repeated cleaning of accessible floor area without operating it yourself. Steps, chairs and difficult corners usually need another suitable tool. For several floors, plan carrying, storage and any additional stations, if the model supports them.

For a vacuum-and-mop product, establish how it prevents wetting the carpet. Floor-detection features vary; do not assume they work like those on a different machine. Check exclusion zones and whether the functions you need require a paid subscription.

Calculate maintenance costs

Compare replacement brushes, filters, station bags, batteries and repairs. Check UK availability of the specified consumables. Ask which parts need manual cleaning and how often that may be necessary with your household's hair, pet hair and debris.

For an app-connected device, review which functions need internet access and what data or images are processed. iRobot documents mapping and obstacle-image features separately ↗; another manufacturer's arrangements may differ.

Assess it after purchase

Prepare the floor and supervise the initial run according to the instructions. Check thresholds, rug edges, the return to the station and results in different rooms. Establish the exact model and return terms before use.

If the robot repeatedly needs rescuing, identify why. Unsuitable thresholds, floor clutter or incorrect settings can consume the time it was meant to save. Good value means a machine that works in your actual home with manageable upkeep, rather than the most expensive model in a range.
