Can you accept one school place while waiting for another in England?

Читать на русскомAfter receiving an English school offer, your child can also be on another school's waiting list. You do not need to leave the child without an offered place first. Check the local procedure and confirm the required steps in writing. GOV.UK: school waiting lists ↗.
Retain an available place
Read the offer letter and respond by its deadline, otherwise the place may be withdrawn. If the school seems unsuitable, discuss specific reasons and available alternatives with admissions before declining. Refusing a place does not guarantee that the council will provide a preferred alternative. GOV.UK: accepting an offer ↗.
Ask whether the current offer remains while you join another list, which forms are needed and what dates matter. If your child is already attending school, maintain the agreed attendance until a new place and transfer date are confirmed.
Understand the waiting list
Request inclusion and written confirmation. Ask how long the list operates, whether you need to renew the request and how to report an address change. Published oversubscription criteria determine priority, rather than simply how early you telephoned. Positions can change when a new applicant has higher priority. DfE: School Admissions Code, paragraph 2.15 ↗.
Being first does not promise a vacancy by a particular date. Arrange education during the wait. A formal waiting-list offer can still be accepted after your child has started at another school. GOV.UK: waiting-list offers ↗.
Consider an appeal separately
Waiting lists and appeals are distinct processes. A refusal letter should explain how to appeal. You must be allowed at least 20 school days from the decision letter being sent to submit an appeal; each school's refusal requires a separate appeal. Keep evidence explaining why that school meets your child's needs and comply with the evidence deadline. GOV.UK: appealing a school's decision ↗.
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are subject to infant class-size limits, which affect the grounds considered. An appeal is not a guaranteed substitute for a waiting list.
Arrange a confirmed transfer
After receiving a new offer, confirm the start date, uniform, transport and transfer of school information. Notify the previous school once the new place is confirmed. Keep correspondence and ask admissions to explain contradictory instructions in writing. If your child has no school at all, ask the council for an available place rather than relying on a single waiting list.
