Self Assessment when a self-employed business has no income

No income does not cancel an HMRC notice

If you are registered for Self Assessment and have received a notice to file, having no customers or no tax to pay does not mean you can ignore it. Check your tax account and letters first: which tax year is requested and what deadline applies?

GOV.UK ↗ says you must tell HMRC if you believe a return is no longer necessary. HMRC will confirm whether you still need to file. Submit the request early enough for a decision before the deadline, and retain its acknowledgement.

Establish what happened during the year

“No income” can mean no sales, no profit after expenses, or no transfers into a personal bank account. These are different situations. Reconcile invoices, platform receipts, refunds and business costs for the period from 6 April to 5 April.

Check other reasons for Self Assessment, including rental income, other untaxed income and the circumstances that originally required registration. A loss can also have tax consequences. Do not enter zeros instead of actual expenses without checking the rules. Gather statements and the previous return for HMRC or a tax adviser.

A pause or a business closure

If the business continues but you currently have no customers, explain that it is a temporary period without income. If you have genuinely ceased trading, use the service for stopping self-employment ↗ and give the actual cessation date.

A final return may be required covering income and expenses up to cessation. VAT and payroll registrations, if relevant, need separate closure steps. Do not assume they have ended simply because a shop has stopped accepting orders.

Avoid an unnecessary penalty

Confirm the outcome with HMRC: has the filing requirement for the particular year been withdrawn, are future returns required, and are any payments or debts outstanding? If the deadline is approaching without a response, contact HMRC to establish the appropriate next step. Do not assume your request has already been approved.

The normal Self Assessment deadlines ↗ differ for paper and online filing. A late-filing penalty can arise even where no tax is due. Keep business records ↗, cessation correspondence and confirmation of the final submission. Closing out a zero-income year properly is easier than reconstructing the position from memory later.
