Set your goal and starting level

For travel, choose conversation with everyday situations; for an examination, choose preparation for the specific DELE or other required test. If you studied Spanish previously, take placement assessment. Recognising words and films does not establish equal speaking and writing ability. Explain how long it has been since your last lessons.

Complete beginners need an introductory A1 group rather than a conversation club. If a Spanish or Latin American variety matters, discuss pronunciation and vocabulary while keeping intelligible communication central.

A practical starting point

Daytime and evening intakes need not cost the same. Request the same information from other providers for a fair comparison.

Check that booking uses the official website, identify the contracting provider and ask what happens if insufficient enrolment cancels a group. Do not assume the next level will run at the same time.

Group or individual lessons

Groups provide routine and practice with different people. Ask about maximum class size and each learner’s speaking opportunities. Private tuition can suit changing work patterns or a narrow objective. Request a plan, adult-teaching experience and a trial lesson.

Being a native speaker does not automatically mean someone can explain beginner grammar. During the trial, assess explanations, corrections and opportunities to speak yourself. Check the teaching language and homework, particularly if your English is limited.

Fees and practice

Compare total costs and teaching hours of the same duration. Check books, digital materials, assessment, rescheduling, cancellation and package expiry. Exam entry may be separate from preparation tuition.

Make time between lessons for short phrase revision, listening and conversation. After several weeks, test the practical goal: can you clarify a booking and understand the response beyond a memorised dialogue? Continue with a group where the workload is manageable and progress visible.
