Check the course format and duration

The Standard Visitor study guidance ↗ permits eligible study for up to six months at an accredited institution, including English courses. The institution cannot be an academy or state-funded school. Particular research, examinations and medical educational activities are also permitted under their own conditions.

Obtain an acceptance letter showing the course title, dates, format, fees and accreditation details. A school's assurance that it accepts tourists does not replace checking the institution and your entry category.

A long course cannot simply be split into visits

An ordinary course lasting more than six months may require Student permission or another appropriate route. English courses longer than six months and up to eleven months ↗ have a Short-term study visa route with separate restrictions.

A genuine distance-learning course can last longer than six months because most study takes place overseas. Visitor permission allows specified in-person visits, such as induction, intensive teaching, progress checks and examinations. It does not authorise living continuously in the UK by describing an in-person course as distance learning. Agree the actual attendance calendar with the institution before booking travel.

Prepare entry evidence

Check whether your passport requires a Standard Visitor visa, ETA or another permission. Alongside the institution's letter, prepare evidence of accommodation, funds for tuition and living costs, your return plan and ties to your normal place of residence. If another person pays, explain the relationship and provide appropriate support evidence.

The Visitor Rules ↗ require a genuine visitor who does not use frequent successive visits to live in the UK or undertake prohibited work. Enrolment does not remove these requirements. Certain research or subjects at postgraduate level or above may require ATAS approval before study begins.

Compare costs and the school's terms

Budget for more than tuition: examinations, materials, accommodation, travel, insurance and immigration costs may be separate. Check refund terms for a visa refusal, rescheduling and course cancellation. Obtain written confirmation of promises before paying a deposit.

Visitor permission normally does not permit ordinary paid or unpaid UK work. Do not plan to finance the course through work your status prohibits. Where a child travels without parents or the programme includes practical activity, check the additional conditions for that situation.

Before extending the course, assess any new immigration route in advance. Do not assume you can automatically switch from visitor to Student permission inside the UK after enrolment. An education provider's letter establishes the study plan, but does not extend your permitted stay or guarantee admission at the border.
