Try a short trip first

A walk or day trip is a better first test than immediately sharing accommodation for a fortnight. Discuss pace, budget, early starts, private time and flexibility. Interest in the same destination does not establish practical compatibility.

For walks, explore Ramblers groups ↗ and individual route conditions. Podruga UK ↗ can help find company through a clear dates, destination and budget proposal. Chat membership is not identity verification.

Shared and separate costs

Agree who books transport and accommodation, who owns tickets and how money is divided. A separate room may matter more than small savings. Avoid sending a large collective budget to an unfamiliar person without clear documentation.

Establish cancellation arrangements: deposits, replacements and non-refundable costs. Record agreements before purchase. An informal friends' trip does not automatically provide the protections expected from a commercial package.

Organised tours

Identify the business selling the trip, inclusions, insurance and cancellation. A walking host and overseas-package seller have different roles. Verify actual product protections rather than a decorative logo.

For active trips, check difficulty, equipment, numbers, language and weather alternatives. “Easy” is relative: compare distance, ascent and personal experience. Strangers cannot be assumed capable of solving every emergency.

Documents and independence

Each traveller checks entry requirements for their own passport and UK status. FCDO explains travel insurance ↗, with destination and activity-specific cover. Sharing an itinerary does not create identical visa rights.

Keep your own tickets, contingency money and accommodation contacts. Share necessary details without posting passports in the group. Compatible companions agree expectations while preserving independence.
