How to prepare financial evidence for a UK visa

Start with the precise visa route

There is no single bank-document package for every UK visa. Visitor, Student, Skilled Worker and partner routes use different requirements. Record the route, family members, application date, funding source and relevant exemptions.

For a visitor application ↗, a credible budget and access to funds matter. No universal account balance guarantees approval. A partner application ↗ has specific financial rules, evidence categories and transitional conditions. An ordinary balance certificate cannot substitute for them.

Check the required period

Student financial guidance ↗ includes a 28-consecutive-day funds rule and document-recency requirements where evidence is required. Skilled Worker maintenance ↗ normally involves £1,270, its own 28/31-day requirements and possible exemptions.

Do not automatically apply those periods to visitors or every family application. Build a calendar showing the holding period, latest evidence date and submission date. If the balance fell below the required level, check the consequences before paying for the application.

Evidence funds and their origin

Obtain bank documentation clearly showing the holder, institution, account, dates, currency, balances and transactions needed for your route. Retain the complete unedited file. A dashboard screenshot may omit necessary details.

Match salary with payslips and account credits, property-sale proceeds with the agreement, and gifts with evidence explaining the circumstances. Do not borrow money briefly merely to display a larger balance. A sponsor should demonstrate the promised support and ability to provide it. A family relationship does not automatically satisfy every financial rule.

Review the package before uploading

Check that the name matches the passport or is explained by name-change evidence, pages are complete, dates are current and amounts match the form. Translate documents not in English or Welsh to UKVI requirements. Do not provide a translation instead of the underlying document.

Make a short compliance table: requirement, file, period and amount. Include fees and mandatory charges in your personal budget, but do not confuse paying IHS with evidence of living funds. For a complex funding source or income category, check the current rules with a registered professional before submission. A large balance cannot correct an unsuitable document or an unmet route requirement.
