How UK visa processing times and priority services work

Find the standard for your application

Do not apply a visitor-visa timeframe to a family application or an in-country extension. Use the outside-UK processing table ↗ or the inside-UK table ↗ and identify the exact route.

Record when the clock starts. Overseas processing normally follows the required identity and document steps: the biometric appointment or completion of the permitted app process. Paying for the form or searching for an appointment does not necessarily start processing. Working days and calendar weeks are different measures.

Check what the additional fee purchases

GOV.UK ↗ currently lists priority at an additional £500, with a usual five-working-day indication for most eligible visas. Settlement, citizenship and family applications made outside the UK normally have a different priority indication of 30 working days. Check availability for your route and location.

Super priority normally costs an additional £1,000 and indicates the next working day for eligible visa and settlement applications, with different timing around weekends. It is not universally available and does not apply to citizenship. Optional centre services are not these UKVI processing services.

Allow for additional checks

Faster processing does not guarantee approval. UKVI may request documents, verify information or require further steps. Respond through the specified channel by the deadline and retain submission evidence.

Read priority-fee refund conditions before paying: a delay does not always trigger reimbursement. Avoid non-refundable travel based on the assumption that a paid service must finish on a particular day. Allow time after the decision to check documents and follow instructions.

If the published period has passed

Check the route, start date, holidays, further-information requests and current processing table. Review spam and the email account used for the application. Contact UKVI through its official finder ↗, providing the reference and timeline.

The contact centre cannot promise a decision date or outcome. A new application or biometric appointment without UKVI instructions is not a normal acceleration method. For an application involving existing permission inside the UK, separately check travel restrictions while awaiting a decision. Courier messages and dashboard changes do not establish approval: wait for the official decision.
