Establish whether removal is necessary

Book a dentist assessment, describing pain, recurrent inflammation, swelling and difficulty opening the mouth. Removal depends on the problem and risks, not merely the presence of a wisdom tooth. The NHS guide ↗ explains the procedure and indications.

Difficulty breathing or swallowing because of substantial swelling needs emergency help. Severe pain or increasing swelling warrants urgent dental assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Who performs the procedure

The dentist assesses tooth position and necessary imaging. Straightforward removal may be possible in the practice; complex cases may need specialist referral. Ask about nerve proximity, expected risks and observation when immediate removal is unnecessary.

Do not purchase a CBCT scan just in case: the treating team selects the appropriate investigation.

Payment and preparation

Clinically necessary removal can be provided through the NHS; adults in England generally follow NHS dental charging rules ↗. A private estimate should explain assessment, imaging, extraction, anaesthetic or sedation and review charges.

Mention medicines, allergies, anticoagulants and medical conditions. Do not stop prescribed treatment independently. For sedation, check escort, food and transport requirements in advance and follow the service's instructions.

Recovery and access to help

Obtain written instructions on wound care, food, cleaning, pain relief and returning to activities. Plan recovery around procedure complexity and your work rather than a promise of normality the next day.

Establish where to seek help for bleeding, worsening pain, fever or swelling, including evenings and weekends. Do not wait for the scheduled review if your condition is deteriorating.
