Introduction

York is not the easiest day trip from London, but it is one of the best weekend trips by train. The city is compact, atmospheric and full of layers: Roman walls, Viking stories, medieval lanes, tea rooms, pubs, independent shops and the huge presence of York Minster.

You can do York as a very long day if you start early, but it is much better overnight. Stay inside or near the walls, walk the city in the evening, and give yourself time for both the Minster and the smaller streets.
