Choose accommodation alongside the school

Compare the room price together with meals, bathroom arrangements, quiet, travel time, arrival dates and cancellation terms. A pleasant school cannot compensate for four weeks of poor sleep. For an adult aged 45+, a private room and an easy commute may be more valuable than another five lessons in an exhausting timetable.

Main school guide ↗ and verified accommodation price examples ↗. Numerical tariffs were checked on 5 October 2026 and appear in the comparison chapter with their season; this chapter explains how to assess the accommodation itself.

The four main options

AccommodationPotential benefitCheck carefullyWhen another option may fit better
HomestayEveryday domestic life and opportunities to talkHousehold, meals, kitchen rules, bathroom and commuteLate schedules, independent cooking or guaranteed privacy
Student residenceIndependence and other studentsResidents' ages, kitchen, bathroom, noise, deposit and available weeksA quieter household or more conversation with local adults
Hotel / serviced apartmentIndependent schedule and possible cleaning servicesTotal charge, kitchen, breakfast, fees and cancellationA longer stay makes the price excessive
Independently booked room / flatChoice of neighbourhood and travelling with companionsListing authenticity, contract, bills, deposit and minimum staySchool help and a quick alternative placement are priorities

“Standard” is not a universal specification. Standard homestay, executive homestay and private bathroom may mean different things at different schools. Compare the written description and confirmation.

Understand the homestay household

Do not assume a traditional family with children, shared evening activities or a house near school. Ask who lives there, how many other students there will be, their ages, whether there are pets and who welcomes you. Ask what everyday conversation is realistically available.

If language practice matters, ask whether students sharing your first language may be placed in the same home. State preferences before booking; a chance to speak English does not guarantee an entirely English-speaking day.

A quiet stay involves more than a private bedroom. Ask about neighbouring rooms, quiet hours, pets, small children and road noise. A photograph of the sitting room is not a description of your bedroom. Establish when you receive the address and household profile and whether you can reasonably reject an unsuitable proposed placement.

Meals: B&B, half board and full board

B&B generally refers to bed and breakfast, half board to two meals, and full board to three. The contract determines the actual provision. Ask for weekday and weekend arrangements, lunches on excursions, self-service breakfast and fixed dinner times.

Ask whether you may cook, store groceries, reheat food or have dinner after arriving late. Included meals do not necessarily include unrestricted kitchen use. Establish whether missed meals are refundable instead of assuming they are.

Disclose allergies, gluten-free requirements, vegan, halal or other diets before placement. Ask about supplements and the provider's ability to meet the exact requirement. Distinguish preferences from medical allergies and discuss cross-contact when relevant.

Bedroom and bathroom

A single room is a private bedroom, not necessarily a private bathroom. En-suite usually describes a bathroom accessed from the bedroom; a private bathroom may be elsewhere. Confirm exclusive use and ensure the invoice includes that category.

Ask about the bed, desk, heating, storage, Wi-Fi and room locks. Allergy requirements may involve pets, carpets and smoking. Mobility needs require specific information about steps, floors, lifts and shower access; a general accessibility description is insufficient.

Double, twin and shared room categories differ. Ask about the number of beds, whether an unfamiliar roommate may be assigned, joint-booking requirements and whether the price is per person or per room.

Residence details that affect value

Check whether photographs show your booked category for your dates. Some offers cover limited seasons or minimum stays; do not assume a residence is available throughout the year for a short course.

Check the bathroom, kitchen or studio facilities, crockery, bed linen, towels, bedroom and communal cleaning, electricity, heating, internet, laundry charges, guests, age restrictions and quiet hours. A shared kitchen does not guarantee included cooking equipment or storage space.

Mature students should ask about the building's actual resident profile and floor arrangements. A student complex may be convenient without providing a quiet environment of similarly aged residents.

Obtain the deposit amount, repayment method and deadline, possible deductions and check-in inventory procedure. A refundable deposit is tied-up cash rather than necessarily a final cost, but it must be available when paying.

The door-to-class commute

Request journey time including walking and connections. “30 minutes on public transport” may omit waiting and walking to the stop. Compare the morning journey, travel after evening activities and the relevant transport zones or passes.

Illustrative comparison: a homestay costing £50 less per week requires an extra £30 in transport, leaving £20 savings. If the round trip takes an extra hour, four five-day teaching weeks add 20 travelling hours. Replace these example figures with the actual routes and fares for your shortlist.

For children, establish supervision as well as distance: who takes them to school, whether independent walking is allowed, whether there is a bus and who responds if a stop is missed. Adult homestay without defined junior supervision is not a camp accommodation package.

Nights, weeks and arrival times

Supply exact arrival and departure dates and times. Check the standard arrival day, key collection, late arrivals, weekend check-in, departure day and each extra-night charge. Verify the number of paid nights against the teaching weeks.

For a night flight, confirm whether check-in is possible or a hotel is needed. A Monday course does not automatically guarantee a Sunday arrival. For residences, request key collection instructions and the flight-delay contact.

Easily missed extras

Possible extras include accommodation placement, high season, special diets, private bathroom, younger age, extra nights, late transfers, cleaning and changes. Your price list and contract establish which apply. Request them in one final calculation.

Read accommodation terms separately. A residence may have stricter cancellation rules than tuition, with separately retained payments. Cancelling lessons does not automatically cancel accommodation without cost.

If the placement does not match expectations

Before payment, establish who handles complaints, emergency availability, relocation timing and responsibility for transport and price differences. A failure to deliver confirmed facilities differs from a change of personal preference; procedures and costs may differ.

At arrival, photograph the condition and any discrepancies, save confirmations and contact the responsible team promptly. Be specific: heating failure, the wrong bathroom category, missing agreed facilities or an unmet dietary requirement.

Do not cancel the whole stay expecting an automatic refund. Follow the stated process and request a written answer. For an urgent child-safety issue, use the programme's emergency contacts and appropriate local services.

Accommodation enquiry template

“I need a quiet single room for… My age is… Bathroom preferences… Meals… Allergies… Maximum acceptable door-to-school commute… Please confirm the total price, number of nights, supplements, deposit, kitchen/laundry rules and cancellation terms. When will I receive the address and household profile? What happens if the accommodation does not match the written confirmation?”

Help comparing quotations

Send two or three quotations to the Tell Me UK bot ↗ or Instagram @tell.me.london ↗. Dates, room categories, invoices and cancellation terms are needed: a weekly price screenshot cannot establish the total.
