List every bill
Ask which charges are included in rent and which accounts must be opened in your name. Record suppliers, meter access and payment dates. A property with lower rent can cost more once heating and commuting are included.
Check the local authority
Find the relevant council and the property's Council Tax band, then check current charges and possible discounts. Eligibility depends on the household and circumstances. Do not assume a discount from the property advertisement. Northern Ireland uses domestic rates rather than Council Tax.
At the start of occupation
Record meter readings and the date responsibility begins. Obtain written confirmation of included services and notify the organisations that need your details. Keep account references and photographs in your personal records.
Sharing costs
Agree how housemates divide bills, what happens during an absence and who manages accounts. Confirm the reconciliation process when someone leaves. An informal split between housemates is separate from liability to a supplier or council.
When something is wrong
Compare the bill with the contract, occupancy dates and readings. Contact the organisation through its official channels and keep written responses. Avoid paying a demand from an unfamiliar link before checking the underlying account.
