Your first British hike: what to check and pack
Choose a suitable route and prepare for weather and changing conditions.
Understand the route
Check distance, ascent, terrain, pace and escape options. Ask a group organiser about experience requirements, group size and a fallback plan. A beautiful photograph does not establish that a hike is suitable.
Weather and daylight
Use a forecast for the specific area and check sunset. Hill conditions can differ from those in the nearby town. Change the route or cancel when conditions are unsuitable rather than treating a summit as obligatory.
Equipment
Prepare footwear with suitable grip, rain and wind protection, water, food, a charged phone, backup power, an offline map and personal first-aid essentials. Adjust the kit to the route and season and check it before departure.
On the path
Use permitted routes, close gates and avoid disturbing animals. Keep away from edges for photographs. Tell someone your plan and expected return, and agree with the leader before separating from a group.
Booking a group trip
Clarify travel, insurance, accommodation, included services, cancellation and weather alternatives. Ask about physical demands before paying and do not infer that a headline price includes everything.
