Find the authority

In England, identify the local council responsible for school admissions at your intended address. Check the process even if moving from abroad. An in-year application is different from the normal entry round.

Read the criteria

Check the admission criteria, deadlines and how preferences are considered. Listing a single school does not by itself improve the chance of getting it. Distance, sibling and other criteria must be read in the actual policy.

Prepare evidence

Ask the council which documents and address evidence it requires for your circumstances. Keep identity and family documents private and submit through the official route. Explain a planned move accurately rather than using an address prematurely.

Offer and next steps

Check response deadlines, accept according to the instructions and arrange the start with the school. Ask about uniform, transport, meals, language support and additional needs. If no place is offered, use the council's stated next steps.

Outside England

Admissions systems differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Start with the relevant local authority or education service, not an English process copied from a forum.
