How to plan rest or sleep during a long airport layover

Identify the area you can access

List the airport, both terminals, connection duration and whether baggage must be collected. Airside is the area beyond controls; landside is the public area. A hotel beside the terminal may require entering the country and is different from a transit rest facility.

Ask the airline whether you can remain in transit throughout the itinerary and obtain the onward boarding pass without leaving. Then check entry permission if you want a hotel or city visit. A long connection does not remove visa requirements.

Checking options in Baku

Baku Airport's official Terminal 1 to Terminal 1 transfer instructions ↗ provide for an international transfer without entering Azerbaijan along the designated Transfer route. This does not mean that every rest facility is on that route or that every terminal is accessible without further procedures.

The current lounge page ↗ lists facilities with different locations and admission conditions. Check your particular lounge's terminal, airside or landside location, opening hours, maximum stay, price and re-entry rules. A membership card does not guarantee available space or a bed.

Beds, capsules and showers

An armchair lounge is not a hotel and does not promise proper sleep. If you need a bed, ask specifically about private sleeping rooms or operating sleeping pods, reservations and access without passport control.

Older Baku maps mentioned pods, but the current facilities listing does not reliably establish whether they remain available today. Obtain confirmation from the airport using the contacts on its official website ↗ before choosing an itinerary. Do not base an overnight plan on the assumption that a formerly free service still operates.

Calculate usable rest time

Deduct disembarkation, transfers, possible immigration, travel to the facility and return before gate closure. Ask about luggage storage and showers separately; they are not always included with lounge admission.

If visiting the city, save a return plan and backup transport. If remaining in the terminal, keep documents and valuables with you, set an alarm with a buffer and monitor gate changes. When sleep is essential before further travel, arrange a confirmed option in advance, even if it costs more than an unverified capsule.
