Buying clothes online in the UK: sizing, sellers and returns

Choose by the actual order terms

ASOS and John Lewis are useful starting points for comparing brands, but convenience depends on the item and seller. A marketplace item may be dispatched by a Brand Partner with a separate return address. Check the named seller and whether returns can share one parcel before paying.

Use the brand's size chart rather than assuming a UK size fits consistently. Compare bust, waist and hip measurements, garment length and fabric. Footwear also needs foot length and width.

Returns are not always free

The ASOS UK instructions ↗, checked on 7 October 2026, list a 28-day period; free returns depend on order and account conditions. Guest orders have a published £3.95 return fee. Brand Partner items go back to that brand. Do not assume every purchase has free returns.

John Lewis publishes separate terms ↗, including a usual 30-day period for eligible purchases in original condition. Exclusions and statutory remedies for faults are separate matters. Read the current terms before payment, especially for underwear, personalised products and cosmetics.

Organise your fitting

Keep labels and packaging, try clothing carefully and avoid wearing it to an event before deciding. Keep makeup away from a pale neckline. Photograph an existing fault before washing or attempting repairs.

Record each parcel's arrival and return deadline. Ordering from several shops can tie up substantial money while refunds are pending. Instalment payments do not necessarily pause when you hand a return to a courier.

Dispatch and refunds

Create the return through the official account or order form. Check the address, QR code and enclosed items; retain drop-off confirmation and tracking. Do not combine separate orders unless permitted.

Warehouse processing and bank crediting take different amounts of time. If a refund is late, provide the order number, returned items and dispatch evidence. For an important occasion, allow time for another outfit rather than relying on the final evening's delivery.
