Understanding cosmetic expiry dates and batch codes

Separate three kinds of information

Minimum durability, usable period after opening and batch identification answer different questions. One cannot replace another. Inspect both container and outer packaging; small products may carry some information separately.

CTPA explains cosmetic labels ↗. Products with minimum durability of thirty months or less use best-before information; longer-lasting products generally use a period-after-opening indication where applicable. Exceptions exist, so a missing symbol alone does not establish non-compliance or unlimited usable life.

The open-jar symbol

A number followed by M indicates months after opening, such as 12M. It is not the manufacturing date. Record the first opening date on your own sticker without obscuring original details. This is more reliable than remembering which season you bought several similar pots.

OPSS illustrates consumer symbols ↗. Follow storage conditions and product-specific instructions as well. Heat, moisture and contamination are not harmless merely because the indicated period has not elapsed.

Using a batch code

A batch reference helps identify production and supports manufacturer enquiries. It need not resemble a calendar date. Third-party checkers may not cover a newer coding system, region or packaging change; their output proves neither authenticity nor a universal expiry date.

Send the manufacturer clear code photographs, exact product name, size, packaging images and purchase information. Ask how that particular production run is labelled. Avoid publishing order references and personal details openly.

When something seems wrong

Changed smell, colour, separation or damaged packaging justify stopping while you investigate. Reformulation is possible, so memory alone may not explain differences. Do not decant the product into an unlabelled container while awaiting clarification.

A checker cannot reconstruct the storage history of an old opened cosmetic. Do not pass it on as definitely suitable. Keep packaging and batch details after an adverse reaction so they are available to the seller, manufacturer or healthcare professional.
