Swapping or passing on unwanted cosmetics in the UK

Separate unwanted from unsuitable

An unopened gift cream and an old opened mascara are different situations. Check condition, usable life, storage and complete labelling before offering an exchange. If you cannot establish when something was opened or what an unlabelled decanted pot contains, do not present it as a safe new item.

Swapping with acquaintances does not remove hygiene concerns. Be particularly cautious with products whose applicators touched eyes or lips. A recipient needs the actual condition, not merely the quantity remaining.

Check the exchange venue's rules

Vinted prohibits used cosmetics ↗, and its branded-item photography guide ↗ permits only brand-new cosmetics. Do not evade restrictions by changing category or describing a used item as a free extra with a paid order.

Charities, local swaps and other platforms have separate acceptance policies. Ask whether the specific product is accepted. Do not leave an unsolicited box outside a charity shop.

Describe it accurately

Give the exact name, volume, seal condition, purchase date, expiry information and known opening date. Photograph your own packaging, ingredients and batch identification. Hide personal information on receipts while retaining relevant product details.

CTPA explains cosmetic labelling and usable life ↗. A batch reference identifies production; it does not replace manufacturer use limits. A third-party code-checker result alone cannot establish authenticity.

Arrange transfer responsibly

Agree postage costs, packaging and carrier acceptance. Perfume and aerosols may face specific restrictions. For collection, choose a convenient public meeting place rather than posting your home address openly.

If an item is unsuitable to pass on, check local disposal arrangements for packaging and contents. Do not combine leftovers into an unlabelled “set”. Declining an exchange can be more sensible than finding a recipient for every opened cosmetic.
