A clean working item for reuse and waste need different routes. Charity shops need donations they can sell; they do not promise free removal of everything unwanted. Check completeness and condition before applying.
BHF lists accepted items ↗ and offers collection requests for suitable furniture and electricals ↗. Eligibility depends on the address, item and team's assessment. Submitting a request is not a confirmed appointment.
Check upholstery labels
BHF requires relevant upholstered donations to have suitable condition and an attached, legible fire label. Do not remove it while preparing. Send photographs of labels, the whole item and damage if unsure about acceptance.
Check doors, drawers and mechanisms. Dirty, substantially damaged or incomplete goods may be declined. Disclosing faults beforehand avoids a collection refusal on moving day.
Arrange handover
Describe floors, lifts, steps, access and parking. Ask whether dismantling is required and who performs it. Do not take furniture apart in a way that prevents assessment or safe reassembly without agreement.
Remove personal documents and erase device data appropriately. Memory cards, SIMs and accounts may remain inside equipment. Ask separately about smaller bags and boxes because furniture collection does not automatically cover every clothing donation.
Keep another option
If a charity cannot accept the item, consider another recipient, resale or council collection. For waste, follow official disposal guidance ↗ and check private collectors' authorisation. Do not leave furniture beside bins without permission.
Arrange collection before key handover with some spare time. Keep confirmation and agree any changes. A useful donation combines a reusable item, a clear recipient and confirmed logistics rather than only a same-day giveaway advert.
