Choosing household cleaners without a strong fragrance in the UK

Read the wording carefully
Look for fragrance-free or perfume-free and check the ingredients and description for the particular version. Sensitive, natural, eco and non-bio are not universal promises that a product contains no fragrance. Products from the same brand, and revised formulations, can differ.
Use the manufacturer’s information and the label on the package being sold, rather than relying solely on an old review. Photograph the name, size and barcode of a product you like. This makes it easier to reorder the actual version rather than a similar scented one.
Build a small collection
Start with one product for one task. When trying laundry liquid, buy a modest quantity and follow the dosing instructions. Consider fabric conditioner separately: an unwanted smell may come from that or another product used in the same load.
For the kitchen and bathroom, confirm surface compatibility. A fragrance-free general cleaner is not automatically suitable for specialist appliance maintenance. Check that the packaging makes accurate dosing practical and compare the quantity used per application.
When skin symptoms are involved
Fragrance preferences and contact irritation are not the same issue. The NHS lists detergents among possible contact-dermatitis irritants ↗. Keep the packaging and describe when symptoms occurred and which products were used. This provides more useful information than assuming every cleaner causes the same allergy.
Ask a pharmacist or GP about recurring symptoms. Marketing language cannot establish individual tolerance. Follow instructions for gloves and ventilation, and do not attempt to strengthen a formulation by mixing it with another cleaner.
Cost and repeat availability
Compare the cost of the prepared solution or an actual wash, delivery and the likelihood of finding the same product locally. A multi-scent online bundle is usually a poor way to test one specified formula. Before a large order, check the returns position for opened consumables.
Keep a brief record of the product, dose, job, result and smell. Change one item at a time so you can tell what improved. A useful household collection consists of a few understandable, compatible products; it does not require a shelf of expensive bottles making similar promises.
