Sorting household recycling under your local council’s rules

Start with your postcode

Find the rules for your present address rather than using bin colours from a previous home. Use GOV.UK to identify your council ↗, then read collection and accepted-material pages. For communal bins, check the labels and building-management instructions.

Similar plastic objects can belong to different streams: packaging, toys and electrical equipment are not interchangeable waste categories. Recycle Now checks items and postcodes ↗.

Check current changes

Simpler Recycling guidance ↗ applies to England. As checked on 7 October 2026, core household changes relate to 31 March 2026, subject to specified transitional arrangements. New plastic-film and bag collection requirements are scheduled for 31 March 2027.

This does not create identical bin colours or numbers throughout the UK. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own arrangements, and local implementation still matters. Do not apply one English announcement to every address.

Prepare materials

Empty food and liquids, flatten boxes where required and follow local lid and bag rules. Do not seal all recyclables inside plastic bags unless accepted. Greasy, mixed-material or contaminated packaging may need another route.

Batteries, lamps, medicines and appliances should not automatically enter ordinary recycling. Check specialist points. Glass bottles and broken mirrors may also be handled differently.

Collections and problems

Check the day, presentation point and bank-holiday schedule. Report missed collections through the council's process within its deadline. Request appropriate containers for a new home.

Do not leave bags beside full communal bins without an authorised arrangement. Tell management about recurring capacity problems. Arrange separate collection for bulky items; a normal refuse day does not promise sofa removal.
