Identify your actual product

Dental insurance, health insurance with a dental allowance and a practice subscription are different products. Obtain your current policy, benefit limits and cover start date. The insurer's name does not establish the benefits of your particular contract.

For example, Bupa ↗ describes reimbursement within a benefit allowance and particular network advantages. These are product-specific features, not universal insurance rules.

Check treatment before booking

Ask separately about preventive care, fillings, crowns, root-canal treatment and emergencies. Confirm annual limits, your contribution, reimbursement percentage, waiting periods and treatment of known problems. For extensive care, send the estimate to the insurer and request written confirmation of applicable terms.

Cosmetic treatment, implants and orthodontics may have separate restrictions. A practice saying it accepts insurance does not confirm payment for your case.

Finding a network dentist

Use your own insurer's directory. Check the individual dentist, service and appointment date as well as the practice name. Certain benefits apply only to selected providers.

Ask whether out-of-network treatment is allowed, whether authorisation is required and who submits the claim. You may need to pay first; direct settlement between the practice and insurer is not guaranteed.

Keep the necessary documents

Retain an itemised treatment record, invoice, payment evidence and any requested clinical justification. Check submission deadlines and document formats. Do not postpone necessary urgent care simply while awaiting a decision on cosmetic elements.

To assess value, compare annual premiums and likely reimbursement with paying per visit. Do not buy cover assuming it will automatically fund an expensive treatment already recommended: check exclusions and coverage dates first.
