Finding NHS dental care in England

Use the NHS dental search ↗ and confirm NHS availability directly. A private appointment at the same practice does not automatically become NHS care. If no places are available, ask about waiting lists and contact the local integrated care board for service information.
Completing a registration form does not guarantee continuing NHS access at that practice. Dental arrangements differ from GP registration.
Check whether charges apply
Most adults pay for NHS dentistry. In England, exemptions include children under 18, people under 19 in full-time education, pregnancy and the twelve months after childbirth. Other grounds and evidence requirements appear on the current NHS eligibility page ↗.
Universal Credit alone is insufficient: income conditions apply. Do not claim an exemption by guessing. On a low income, investigate the NHS Low Income Scheme and HC2 or HC3 certificates.
Clarify the course of care
Obtain a plan distinguishing NHS and private elements before treatment. Ask for the overall charging category rather than unexplained prices per tooth. Cosmetic services may remain private even when NHS treatment is free for you.
Keep exemption evidence, estimates and receipts. England's rules should not automatically be applied to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
If treatment is urgent
Describe pain, swelling, injury and fever when requesting help. Without a dentist or available urgent appointment, use NHS 111 for routing. An emergency appointment may address the immediate problem without accepting you for the full subsequent course.
Threatened breathing, major trauma or uncontrolled bleeding needs emergency care. Do not wait for a routine examination place with dangerous symptoms.
