GP, NHS 111, urgent treatment centre or A&E: choosing care in England

Call 999 for a life-threatening emergency

Severe breathing difficulty, stroke signs, a suspected heart attack and other life-threatening conditions require emergency help. The NHS explains when to call 999 ↗. Give the location, what happened and who needs help, then follow the call handler's instructions.

Do not choose a service solely by expected queue length. A&E prioritises clinical urgency; arriving by ambulance does not itself guarantee immediate assessment.

Urgent help today when the route is unclear

In England, use NHS 111 ↗. The online service is for ages 5 and over; telephone for a younger child. The service assesses symptoms and recommends an action, sometimes arranging contact with a clinician.

Have the person's age, symptom duration, medicines, allergies and address ready. If deterioration occurs while waiting for a callback, reconsider urgency; call 999 for danger to life.

GP and pharmacy care

GP practices handle new and recurring problems, chronic conditions, examinations and prescribing. Tell reception when a problem is urgent: questions about symptoms help route you to the right professional.

A pharmacist ↗ can help with minor illness, medicine safety and eligible Pharmacy First conditions. This is assessment within a defined pathway rather than a universal replacement for GP care. Mention pregnancy and important medical conditions immediately.

When an urgent treatment centre is suitable

A UTC ↗ handles urgent conditions that are not life-threatening, including certain injuries. Facilities vary: not every centre has X-rays or treats children. Check hours, age limits and booking arrangements, preferably through 111.

Before leaving any service, clarify the likely cause, treatment plan, warning signs and who arranges follow-up. Keep the discharge summary. Outside England, use the local NHS service because names and urgent-care arrangements can differ.
