How to choose a maternity hospital and start NHS pregnancy care

Start NHS maternity care as soon as you know you are pregnant. In England, self-referral directly to a maternity service is available; your GP can help identify one. Discuss birth location with a midwife based on health, pregnancy needs, services and travel.

Self-refer and confirm receipt

Find pregnancy self-referral on the chosen NHS trust's official website. Supply dates, address, conditions, medicines and pregnancy history. Keep confirmation; contact maternity booking staff if no appointment arrives. NHS: antenatal care ↗.

Do not wait for a private scan before declaring pregnancy. If moving during care, arrange record transfer and upcoming investigations to prevent gaps.

Compare clinical facilities

Options may include an obstetric hospital unit, midwifery-led birth centre and home birth. Suitability depends on individual risk; certain conditions or complications make hospital specialist care safer. NHS: where to give birth ↗.

Ask about epidurals, operating theatres, neonatal care and transfer from a birth centre. Establish which pregnancy changes could alter the plan. Private rooms and attractive photographs do not answer these questions.

Assess everyday organisation

Find where antenatal appointments and scans take place; they may be separate from the birth location. Check day and night travel, parking, interpretation, birth-partner rules and feeding support.

Read the current maternity CQC report ↗, noting its date and exact service. Ask about virtual tours, birth-preference discussions and support after previous difficult births.

Agree the plan and contacts

Record maternity triage details, labour contact arrangements and support after discharge. Discuss community midwives, health visitors and postnatal checks. You can reconsider location, but organise any transfer formally with records.

Access to NHS care and entitlement to free hospital treatment are assessed separately: contact the overseas visitors team if uncertain while continuing appointments. Urgent pregnancy concerns need contact with maternity services now rather than waiting until your choice is final. Check local booking routes elsewhere in the UK.
