How to see a neurologist in London through the NHS or private care

Sudden facial or arm weakness, speech changes and other stroke signs require 999. The NHS explains that stroke is an emergency ↗. Symptoms that have resolved must not simply wait for a routine private appointment.
A first seizure happening now also needs emergency help. Someone with diagnosed epilepsy follows their individual plan; the NHS describes emergency criteria ↗. These situations differ, so a universal instruction to wait for a neurologist is unsafe.
Routine GP pathway
For recurring headaches, numbness, tremor or an established condition, start with your GP. Prepare a timeline, episode frequency and duration, triggers, medicines and previous results.
Your GP assesses the symptoms and may make a referral ↗. Ask which team is appropriate and what to do before the appointment. Do not independently order a whole-brain MRI without a clear clinical question.
Choosing a London neurologist
Check the doctor and specialty through the GMC ↗. Neurologists and neurosurgeons have different roles. Ask about the relevant interest: migraine, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis or movement disorders.
For insurance, approve the consultant, clinic and proposed investigations before payment. Self-paying patients should request assessment, follow-up and results-review charges.
Transferring treatment and planning follow-up
Bring overseas reports, available original-format images, EEG reports and medicine schedules. A translated key summary is more useful than a large disorganised archive.
Clarify prescribing and monitoring responsibility, the next review and how to report changes. Do not independently stop anti-seizure or other regular medicine. Mention running-out supplies immediately rather than waiting for the specialist date. Obtain a GP report and separate deterioration instructions after the appointment.
