A facial is generally a cosmetic face treatment, but its stages vary. Cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, masks and facial massage describe different elements. Do not assume every menu includes all of them.
Start with: “I would like a gentle facial. Could you explain what is included?” Terms such as deep cleansing, peel and resurfacing are not interchangeable. Ask about the product and method when the name is unclear.
Explain restrictions
“My skin is sensitive, and I have reacted to this product before” describes sensitivity and a previous reaction. “I use a prescribed skin treatment” opens a discussion about medication. Bring its name, avoid stopping it yourself and establish whether the prescriber's advice is needed.
“Please do not include extractions or a peel without discussing it with me first” sets a clear boundary. A written list can help if conversation is difficult. Difficulty speaking English does not amount to agreement to every additional stage.
Before paying
Ask: “Is the consultation included in the price?” and “What is the total cost, including any extras?” Establish treatment duration, deposit and cancellation separately. “Bespoke” indicates individual selection, not a fixed price.
BABTAC recommends checking training, insurance and consultation ↗. Ask: “Who will carry out the treatment, and what training do they have for this procedure?” If a medical outcome is promised, establish who is responsible for assessing the condition.
During and afterwards
“Please stop. This is painful” requests an immediate pause. “I do not consent to this additional treatment” refuses an extra procedure. Report significant burning or discomfort during treatment rather than waiting until it ends.
Ask: “Could you write down the products used and the aftercare instructions?” Keep the list and establish whom to contact after a reaction. A cosmetic facial does not replace diagnosis of a persistent rash or other skin disease.
