NHS recommends at least SPF30 and suitable UVA protection ↗, including at least four UVA stars as a guide. UVA in a circle indicates the relevant standard. SPF measures UVB protection rather than replacing the UVA assessment.
Sunscreen complements shade and clothing. A high number is not permission to remain outside longer. Include ears, neck and exposed scalp when considering facial protection.
Sensitivity and ingredients
Read the complete ingredients and consider personal triggers. Mineral, natural and hypoallergenic cannot guarantee no reaction. Confirmed allergy requires avoiding the actual ingredient rather than relying on a marketing category.
BAD explains contact dermatitis ↗. Recurrent reactions warrant dermatology discussion. Trial use according to instructions can assess tolerance without replacing diagnosis. Do not repeatedly apply an irritating product merely to get used to it.
Makeup and sunscreen
Foundation with SPF may not be applied in the quantity needed for its labelled protection. Consider a separate sunscreen layer with a comfortable texture. Small packs can help compare compatibility before buying a large bottle.
Reapplication depends on instructions, sweating, water and rubbing. Water resistance does not eliminate the need to renew protection. Powders and sprays require appropriate application and should not automatically be assumed equivalent to a full application.
Cost and storage
Compare volume price, actual consumption, opened shelf life and daily usability. Check seller and packaging integrity. Avoid permanently storing sunscreen in an overheated car. Prescribed treatment or photosensitivity may need an individual protection plan from a clinician.
