Using an overseas card and withdrawing cash in the UK

Check the card with its issuer

An overseas card works only where its payment network, particular product and issuing bank are supported. An international network logo does not guarantee that every card works in the UK. Before travelling, ask the issuer about current restrictions, UK purchases, cash withdrawals and online authentication.

Check the expiry date, PIN, app access and the phone number receiving one-time codes. Ask whether travel notification is necessary. Arrange a backup payment method that does not depend on the same card and phone.

Separate the possible charges

Obtain the issuer’s tariff for overseas purchases, cash withdrawals, minimum fees and currency conversion. For a credit card, check cash-advance interest and conditions separately. The ATM operator may impose an additional charge.

Visa’s calculator indicates exchange rates for international card transactions ↗. It does not promise your bank’s final debit. Check actual conversion and additional fees on the statement.

Choose the ATM and transaction currency carefully

Use a machine in a suitable location, inspect it and shield your PIN. LINK’s Cash Locator identifies cash access locations ↗, but a listed machine is not a guarantee of compatibility with your foreign card.

Read the amount and charges before confirming. If offered payment in your card currency rather than GBP, compare the displayed rate and markup with your issuer’s terms. Do not accept automatically just because the amount looks familiar. Avoid withdrawing unnecessarily large sums solely to reduce a minimum fee if storing the cash creates problems.

Deal with declines or incorrect debits

After repeated declines, stop retrying and check bank notifications. The cause may be a limit, block, compatibility issue or security review. Never hand your card to an unknown “helper” or share authentication codes.

If the account was debited but cash was not dispensed, retain the time, location, reference and receipt and notify the issuer promptly. If the card is lost or retained, use the official blocking process and obtain bank instructions. A refunded purchase can differ because of exchange rates: check the currency of the original transaction and refund before assuming the difference is a merchant fee.
