Check what your account supports

Start with your own bank’s app or tariff: does it allow cash deposits, deposit-taking ATMs, counter service or Post Office transactions? A digital account does not necessarily accept cash, and a bank branch may be cashless. Do not apply a friend’s account conditions to your product.

For a large amount, ask in advance about appointments, identification, limits and ordering banknotes. Check denominations and crediting times. Do not artificially split transactions to avoid questions; prepare a clear explanation of where the money came from instead.

Use an appropriate service point

Post Office lists banking services by bank ↗. Some accounts support both deposits and withdrawals; others support only particular transactions. Requirements for a card, PIN or paying-in slip also vary. Post Office states that individual banks set the limits.

Check the actual branch and banking-service opening hours before travelling. Bring the required card or documents and count the cash. Obtain a receipt and check its amount before leaving. LINK’s Cash Locator ↗ can help locate an ATM.

Check charges and retain evidence

Check deposit fees, charges above a free allowance and channel-specific costs. For withdrawals, distinguish the ATM operator’s fee from your bank’s fee. Read the screen before confirming: available balance and daily withdrawal limit are different constraints.

For money from selling an item, withdrawing from another bank or exchanging currency, retain the agreement, statement and exchange receipt. Documents do not guarantee an immediate review, but help explain the transaction coherently. Depositing your own money does not itself establish its tax treatment.

If something goes wrong

If an ATM retains the card, fails to dispense cash or records an incorrect amount, note the time, location, machine reference and transaction value. Contact the bank through its app or the number on your card, rather than an unfamiliar sticker on the machine.

For delayed credit, provide the receipt and request a case reference. Never give a PIN, one-time code or full card details to someone promising to speed up a refund. Report an unauthorised debit immediately rather than treating it only as a processing-time query.
