Читать на русскомDefine the service and language direction
Written translation, interpreting, subtitling and machine-translation editing are different services. Knowing Russian, Ukrainian and English does not mean being equally ready to work professionally in every direction. Select the language pairs and subjects in which you can ensure accurate, well-written output.
The official translator profile ↗ describes training and work through language service providers or independently. Medical, legal and technical texts require subject knowledge. Do not accept responsibility in an unfamiliar field simply to secure a first assignment.
Demonstrate quality
Prepare a concise professional CV showing language directions, specialisms, qualifications, CAT tools and relevant projects. Add short samples you have permission to publish. You can produce a demonstration translation using suitable open material with appropriate permission.
The Institute of Translation and Interpreting ↗ is a professional source for entering the field. Compare training, mentoring and membership requirements with your goal. A qualification or membership does not guarantee assignments, but helps explain competence. For public-service interpreting or particular institutions, check their own qualification and background-check requirements.
Find initial assignments
List translation agencies working with your languages and specialism, examine their linguist recruitment pages and apply through the specified route. Also explore direct clients in an industry you know and relevant vacancies. Distinguish an employed role from registration as a freelance supplier.
For a translation test, establish length, deadline, criteria and whether the text will be used commercially. Do not complete a large finished project as an indefinitely extended free test. Verify the organisation and contact domain before providing documents. Use your own professional materials without disclosing confidential client data.
Agree price and administration
Confirm scope, language direction, format, deadline, revisions and payment before starting, whether per word, hour or project. Clarify repetitions, minimum fees, urgency and additional services. Interpreting needs separate agreement about time, travel and cancellation.
Record agreements, invoices and receipts. For independent activity, check HMRC's working-for-yourself rules ↗, registration and deadlines. Agree confidentiality, personal-data handling and whether external AI tools are permitted. Do not upload client material to a public service without an agreed basis and suitable terms.
