Assess the actual tasks

Limited English does not define your professional value, but it affects safety, communication and available roles. Instead of saying “any job will do”, list what you can already manage: instructions, rotas, customer questions, a till or professional software.

Assess vacancies against your skills and the actual duties. Warehousing, cleaning, kitchens, manufacturing and customer-facing work have different requirements; none guarantees recruitment without English. Ask how training works, which instructions you must understand and who supports a new starter.

Searching and presenting yourself

Use Find a job ↗, direct employer websites and agencies with clear terms. Search several British titles for similar work and filter by location, hours and transport. A Russian-speaking supervisor does not replace checks on the employer and pay.

Prepare a straightforward English CV covering experience, practical duties, availability and relevant certificates. Describe your English honestly and specifically. Practise a short introduction and phrases for checking instructions. You can ask an interviewer to repeat a question; memorised answers should not conceal a lack of understanding of the job.

Documents, pay and first shifts

You must prove your right to work ↗ through an appropriate route before starting. Do not leave your original passport with an employer or intermediary. A National Insurance number is not itself permission to work.

Request written confirmation of gross pay, hours, holiday, training pay and trial-shift arrangements. Compare the offer with the current minimum-wage rates ↗, which depend on age and apprenticeship circumstances. Do not accept lower pay merely because of your English: the applicable legal minimum concerns the work, not nationality.

Learn English for the job

Find ESOL through the official course search ↗, a local college or adult education service. Fees and funding depend on the course and your circumstances; confirm any free place with the provider.

Practise role-specific vocabulary alongside general study: safety, times, numbers, requests, mistakes and complaints. After a shift, note unfamiliar expressions without recording customer information. As your skills improve, expand your search towards your previous profession or the next level. Your first job after relocation does not have to determine your whole career.
