Start with real tasks

Workplace English can mean emails, meetings, telephone calls, customer service or a professional examination. List three situations where language is a barrier and a concrete outcome, such as explaining a delay, asking for clarification or presenting a project. This is more precise than simply requesting Business English.

If basic phrases remain difficult, start with general English or ESOL incorporating work tasks. Advanced negotiation training cannot replace missing foundations.

Compare provision

British Council LearnEnglish ↗ provides business communication resources, including emails, interviews and professional listening. Check the stated learner level. City Lit describes employee skills provision ↗ involving English, ESOL and workplace communication; the actual class and funding need separate confirmation.

For a specialist field, search for English for Specific Purposes, such as medical, legal, hospitality or engineering English. Request task examples for your role. A capable general teacher may not know a professional examination’s requirements.

Assess the teaching

Check placement assessment, entry level, speaking time and written feedback. Role plays and typical documents can be useful. For private lessons, agree vocabulary, text types and homework correction arrangements.

Do not share actual client data or internal employer documents without permission. Use anonymised examples instead. Agree how lesson recordings and materials are stored and used. If the employer pays, establish which progress information will be shared with it.

Tests, costs and progress

A Business English certificate does not automatically replace IELTS, OET or another specified result. For professional registration or admission, first check the receiving organisation’s official requirement and test version.

Compare tuition, group size, independent hours, materials, cancellation and assessment. Ask about employer support and study time. After several weeks, repeat the original work task and assess clarity, speed and understanding of the response. Completing it independently matters more than memorising terminology alone.
