What can you buy for heartburn and indigestion in England?

Describe the symptoms first

Gastritis and indigestion are not interchangeable diagnoses. Explain where discomfort occurs, its relationship to meals, any acid taste, frequency and what you have tried. Burning alone does not establish a diagnosis.

For ordinary heartburn, a pharmacist may discuss an antacid, alginate or another suitable product. The NHS outlines the options ↗, but the choice depends on symptoms, pregnancy, medical conditions and other medicines.

Check before paying

Show a complete medicine list, including painkillers and supplements. Ask whether the new product needs to be spaced from regular treatment, how long to use it and when self-treatment should stop.

Check the ingredient and pack size. Over-the-counter purchases are usually paid for privately. Do not buy several similar remedies at once: first obtain a clear plan from the pharmacist ↗.

When to see your GP

Recurring symptoms, reliance on continuing treatment, swallowing difficulty, unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting or anaemia need medical assessment. Your GP will decide whether investigations are appropriate and which service is needed.

Bring a short symptom diary and a list of products already tried. If a test is ordered, ask about preparation and whether current medicines affect it. Do not independently stop prescribed treatment to prepare for a test you think you might need.

When the pharmacy is not enough

Chest pain must not automatically be attributed to heartburn. Signs of a heart attack, severe illness or vomiting blood require emergency care. For urgent symptoms when you are unsure which service to use, contact 111 ↗.

For everyday management, discuss portion sizes, late meals and personal triggers. Avoid strict exclusion diets or months of treating presumed gastritis solely on friends' advice. Continuing symptoms change the next step from another purchase to medical assessment.
